The Expansion of Leadership
Leader shift…

• We need better leaders
• We need leaders who will focus on learning the ‘Art of the SHIFT’
• We need leaders who are not just reacting to moments but responding to opportunities

Developing the Leader within you
Self Evaluation Exercise

1. The definition of Leadership
2. Priorities
3. Character – you need to understand what are your values, what are non negotiables.
4. Creating Positive Change
5. Problem solving – whose problem are you solving?
6. Attitude
7. Serving People – ‘How can I serve you
8. Defining Vision – define and redefine your vision every year.
9. Self- Discipline – The price tag of leadership.
10. Personal Growth – The expansion of leadership

The law of the lid

Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness. The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential.

The higher level of leadership, the greater the effectiveness. A person’s leadership ability always determines their effectiveness and potential impact. Success is within reach of just about everyone. Personal success without leadership ability brings only limited effectiveness.

The higher you want to climb, the more you need leadership. The greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be. How well you lead determines how far you go. My leadership lid holds down how far I will go.

What is your leadership number now?
What number do you think you could achieve?
What is your plan to increase your number?

The Anatomy of GROWTH

With a new born baby there is constant growth
You constantly disrupt their comfort zone
You give no advance warning they go from milk to solids etc
As babies grow up getting teeth is a painful process, there has to be a shedding, you leave things behind that you no longer need.

• The illiterate of the future are not those who cannot read or write, but those who refuse to Learn, Unlearn and Relearn.

LEARN
• What do I need to learn today that I didn’t know yesterday?

UNLEARN
• What do I need to let go of today that I held on to yesterday?

RELEARN
• What do I need to change today that I was doing yesterday?

Now Growth
Growth comes because of dropping bad habits, changing wrong priorities and embracing new ways of thinking.

Personal Growth
• If we don’t change, we don’t grow
• If we don’t GROW we are not really living
• Growth demands a temporary surrender of security.

John C Maxwell…
“Growth is the only guarantee that tomorrow will get better.” Growth means….

Giving up the familiar:
• Limiting patterns
• Unrewarding work – work has to have meaning
• Values no longer believed in
• Relationships that have lost their meaning – the people you begin with are not always the same people you will end with.

Things I have learned…
1. The thing that will hold you back the most is the way you think, not your family, your employer, your industry not your country. It’s your thinking, we need the renewing of our minds. Enjoy every season, if you don’t you will end up acting like 20 when you are 50.
2. You have more potential than you realize and understanding this will affect how much of it you tap into.

The law of respect:
Accepting yourself, value yourself and your work, be true to yourself, be authentic, believing in yourself and what God has put in you. Respecting others without developing the gifts within yourself, respect yourself, then it is misrepresented respect. Understanding what your areas of gifting are will keep you focused and help you to understand your value and worth and value what others bring to the table.

3. ALL your feelings come from your thinking, not from something or someone outside of you.

Are you ready and willing to do what is necessary to get the thing achieved that you have been asked to do?

4. You cannot outperform your own self- image. Your results will always correspond with your identity which you have created yourself in your mind.

We become prisoners to what is in your mind.

Your decision not to make a decision is a decision.

5. You carry a distorted view of the joys of the past, the pain of the present and the risks of the future.

Just because God is using me does not mean He needs me. Walk in what God has called you to do.

Developing the Learner in you…

Adopt a learners mindset
• Good leaders are learners
• Learn from everyone you meet
• What is your mindset about growth
• What must you change in your attitude to become a better learner?
• Make a decision to learn something today and every day.

Develop a specific Growth Strategy…
• Growth is not automatic
• You have to fight for it
• Where do I need to focus my growth (Big picture)
• How can I measure and affect my growth? ( Measurement)
• How can I grow daily? (Consistency)
• Can I act on it? (Application)
